Young Africans, the team that appeared as the dark horse of 2009 FA Cup championship yesterday conquered Gamtel FC 3-1 in a post match penalty shoot out at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium, to clinchedtheir first ever major silver wear in their football history.
The final that produced a remarkable performance from the two contenders, the defeated team, Gamtel, controlled and dominated possession in most part of the game with some handful of one and one passes in the midfield was unable to break the defensive prowess of the Young Africans defense.
Sainey Touray of Young African whose creativity and skillful play was always a threat to his opponent. Spectators at the final were hugely entertained with some of his dazzling skills on the ball. The 90 minute of the game produce no goal, since not too many chances was created.
Musa Camara, Dodou Suso and Kabba Jobe all players of Gamtel missed their spot kicks while only Lamin Manerah converted his penalty for Gamtel FC. For the cup winners, Young African’s three goals were scored by Abdoulie Samba, Saliou Ceesay and Baboucarr Bah while Kuwesy Mendy also missed his penalty for Young Africans.
The championship which was sponsored by Gamtel presented a giant trophy and D50, 000 to the winners and D30, 000 to the runners up. The final was graced by the Speaker of the National AssemblyMadam Elizabeth Renner, Sheriff Gomez Minister of Sports, CDS Lang Tombong Tamba, Seedy Kinteh President GFA and many other personalities.
Sulayman Corr, head coach of Gamtel praised his boys for putting up strong a performance and stated that his team was only not lucky to score in the field of play. He revealed that, “his side was hard luck”.
Ebou Joof the elated assistant coach of Young Africans was full of praised for the victors and blissfully elucidated their strong commitment to promote the new FA Cup champions to first divisional football come next season. He explained that all efforts will be made to ferry his side to participate in the continental championship.
