Friday, September 18, 2009

The Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG) on Wednesday 16th September 200 9, celebrated its two years of existence, at a colourful ceremony held at the Gambia Press Union Secretariat in Bakau.

In his welcoming remarks, Nfamara Jawneh, the out going President said the day is meant to reflect on the achievements and constraints of the association.

“Despite our collective achievements, there is a need to improve in making The Gambia more press friendly and also to inculcate a greater spirit of responsible journalism in young journalists,” says the out going YJAG leader.

He revealed that YJAG seeks to promote mutual understanding among young Gambian journalists, provide them with training opportunities, complement the efforts of the Gambia Press Union in promoting press freedom in the country, among others.

Capacity-building, he said, remains the prime focus of the association, especially with the proliferation of media houses. He noted that well-trained journalists are in great demand in the industry.

He used the forum to appeal, on behalf of young people in the media, for improved better government-media relations as the two are partners in development.

He thanked all those who have been supporting them over the past two years.

Mrs. Amie Bojang-Sissoho, the Board Chairperson of YJAG congratulated the young journalists for their achievements.

She encouraged them to strive hard for the attainment of the set goals. Madam Bojang also encouraged them to consider the gender dimension when electing people into responsibility.

Mr. Pap Saine and Mr. Sam Sarr, the Managing Directors of The Point Newspaper and Foroyaa Newspapers, respectively, who are also board members of the association, both felicitated the young journalists for the successes.

The veteran journalists advised country’s young journalists towards achieving their objectives.

Demba Kandeh, the Secretary-General of YJAG delivered a comprehensive report of all the activities carried out by the association since its formation. He appealed for support.

Aminata Sanneh, the Treasurer of the association delivered the financial report of the association.

Later in the day, members held a congress to elect new executive to steer the affairs of the association.

Assan Sallh of the Daily Observer was elected President, replacing Nfamara Jawneh, the founding President.

After the election, President-elect Sallah thanked the members for the confidence bestowed on him. He also thanked his predecessor, Jawneh for the selfless sacrifice he has been doing for the association.

Former President Jawneh congratulated the new executive, while assuring them of his support.

He cautioned the new team to work as a team and within the dictates of the YJAG constitution.

Certificates were also awarded to deserving institutions and individuals, as well as former executive members for their contributions to the development of the association.
