The Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, has received letters from the leaders of Philippines and Zambia, congratulating him on the occasion of The Gambia’s 44th Independence Anniversary celebrations. Below is a reproduction of the full text of messages received from the Office of the President, State House, Banjul.

Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, President of the Philippines
Excellency,
The government and people of The Philippines join me in extending warm greetings to Your Excellency and the people of The Gambia as you commemorate your national day. On this auspicious occasion, I reaffirm the Philippines’ commitment to further enhance the friendly and cooperative relations between our countries for the mutual benefit of our peoples.

The Philippines looks forward to greater interaction with The Gambia in the bilateral and multilateral area, particularly at the United Nations and the new Asia-African strategic partnership. I take this opportunity to wish your Excellency continued good health and success, and the people of The Gambia, greater peace and prosperity.

Accept, Excellency, the renewed assurances of my highest esteem and consideration.

His Excellency Rupiah B Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia
Your Excellency,
On behalf of the people and government of the Republic of Zambia and, indeed, on my behalf, I wish to convey sincere congratulations on the occasion of The Gambia’s 44th Independence Anniversary, which falls on 18th February 2009.

Zambia and The Gambia enjoy cordial relations founded on mutual respect and trust. Zambia, therefore, stands ready to explore areas of cooperation in order to promote our bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of our two countries.

Please accept, Your Excellency, my best wishes for your continued personal good health and prosperity for the Gambian people.

Condolence message
On a rather sad note, the Gambian leader also received a condolence letter from Alhaji Muhammadou Sahor, MRG, on the demise of Alhagi Momadou Baboucarr Njie, GCRG, former speaker of the National Assembly.

The message reads:
Assalamu Alaikum Wa-rahmatullahi Wa-barakatuhu.
In the name of the entire family of Alhagi MB Njie, a former Speaker of the National Assembly, who passed to eternity on Tuesday 3rd March, 2009 and was laid to rest on Wednesday 4th of March, 2009, I write to express our condolences to you, your family, your government, and, indeed, the entire Gambian nation.

On that sad day in the nation’s history, you quickly and spontaneously decided to accord Alhaji Momadou Baboucarr Njie a state funeral. This action, Your Excellency, examplifies the height of your magnanimity as head of state. Your action has evoked the complete admiration of thousands of Gambians, and indeed [those] beyond our borders. The burial service was both spiritually edifying, sombre and colourful. It will certainly go down well in the annals of Gambian history.

We pray that for this noble gesture of yours, Allah the Almighty rewards you abundantly and crown all your efforts with success.

Wa-Saalaam
