The Centre for Youth, Women and Children Development (CYWCD) on Sunday awarded scholarships to six students from Greater Banjul, Tallinding and Bakoteh upper basic schools.
The grant was received from the Plymouth-Banjul Challenge to implement an activity call “Run for your knowledge” which took the form of a marathon from the MDI junction via the Taiwanese embassy to Gambega. Twenty-two students participated in the race, after which six were awarded scholarships for 2009 and the rest were awarded certificates of participation. The presentation was held at the KMC chambers in Kanifing.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the executive director of CYWCD, Kebba Augusa, said the organisation was formed in August 2005. He added that its activities are geared towards addressing issues concerning women, youth and children and also to create awareness on gender and women’s rights while promoting youth participation in enterprise development as well as sensitizing communities about issues regarding our environment, health and other issues.
He thanked the students who took part in the race. Korka Jallow, public relation officer of the organisation, expressed the organisation’s continued support to the young people of the country. He called on the people to come and support them.
For his part, the Kanifing municipality youth committee chairperson, Bakary Badjie, thanked CYWCD for the initiative and implored the beneficiaries to make best use of the rare opportunity accorded to them.
