Hello and a warm welcome to yet another scintillating edition of Personality of the Week, your weekly column aimed at bringing prominent Gambian top notches and achievers into the limelight.
As stated in our previous editions, this column has and will continue to bring you profiles of the giants in today’s Gambia most especially women. In today’s edition, we bring you the profile of a woman who while sighting her on the move, coupled with her diverse educational background, one clearly reads the great handwritings on the wall, “Women are indeed on the right track towards national development in The Gambia”; a young woman who has symbolised, and in fact proved beyond reasonable doubt that loyalty and commitment to the development of ones country pays.
Having already left an indelible mark in all corners of society, there is no doubt that this young woman has today earned the respect of many Gambians owing to his indisputable loyalty, honesty, simplicity, handwork and commitment to duty.
Her ability to succeed has been established beyond any doubt. She could pass unnoticed save for the aura of greatness that speaks more of her. Her impressive track record coupled with her diverse job experience has prepared her to face the challenges of her current position. It has also put her upright as the one of the greatest citizens that this country has ever produced.
This great woman worthy of being recorded by the present and future histories of the Gambia and Africa in general is no other than Majula Jaiteh, Electrical Engineer, Assistant Power Manger at Africell Gambia Limited, Gambia’s leading and most preferred GSM operator.
Daughter of the famous Business tycoon Salifu K. Jaiteh, a household name in the Gambia, Majula’s style of life gives surge and confidence and spurs growth and greatness in the lives of the willing.
Through her landmarks, she has made vivid the fact that women indeed also have a very important role to play towards the development of not only this country but also the world at large.
Her journey to greatness, characterised by the rare virtues of honesty, hard work and discipline, is noteworthy. As a role model for all, Majula’s capabilities, skills, high sense of discipline and strategic initiatives put her upright as a corporate citizen.
Born Twenty-five years ago (1983) into a highly educated and respected family, Majula’s flair for quality and excellence is easily noticeable because for this young lady, business and pleasure are two different things.
She set forth her educational journey at MarinaInternationalSchool from 1996 to 2001 where she proceeded to LambethCollege in LondonUK. At LambethCollege, Majula graduated in the year 2003 with a BTEC National Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering; 20 modules (12 distinction and 8 merits) and Pass in key skills and Numerical skills.
From LambethCollege, Majula proceeded to University of Bradford, where she graduated with BEng (Hons) Electronics Telecoms and Internet Engineering- Achieved 2.2.
From 2003 to 2006, Majula worked with Ladbrokes Ltd, London and Bradford where she developed excellent customer services experience, teamwork and communication skills by coming in direct contact with customers. She gained experience on how to work under high pressure by taking over 500 bets on Saturdays and over 1000 bets on Grand National day, handling over £2000 a days.
Seen as a delight to behold, Majula also worked for C30 Call Centre, Skipton as a Telesales Person (outbound department). Her duties among others involved calling customers with other energy suppliers aiming to transfer them over to Powergen.
She gained experience on how to work in a target driven environment and consistently achieved daily targets, which were 4 sales per day individually. From there, she then proceeded to Ventura Call Centre, Sky Department, Leeds as a Customer Services Adviser (weekends). She was responsible for taking inbound calls from Sky TV customers and to help them with their quires.
This involves up grading packages, taking payments, changing subscriptions, transferring calls to other departments, explaining billings etc.
Majula has and continued to be a Supervisor for ACCA Examinations at ACCA Examination Board London. She gained skills working as a Supervisor. This entails organising and co-ordinating a group of 10 invigilators and 200 students. It also required her to allocate shifts, breaks and deals with invigilators queries. she also deal with the payment of the invigilators.
It was her responsibility that all students are given the correct paper and make sure that all exams papers are collected and post to different examiners. She also worked for A Novo UK Ltd, Shipley as a Testing, Repair and Maintenance Technician (Sky HD, Sky +, Sky digiboxes).
Her duties involve performing diagnostic test to find the source of any malfunction, Utilizing multimeters, circuit testers, oscilloscopes, logic probes and other test equipment to inspect and test electronic equipment, components and assemblies, diagnosing and locating circuits, hard drives, components and equipment faults, Adjusting, aligning replacing or repairing parts and maintaining records such as work orders, test and maintenance reports.
From February 2007 to June 2008, Majula worked with ERSKINE, TT ELECTRONICS as a Testing, Repair and Maintenance Engineer. As a Test Engineer, her duties involve writing, testing procedures and testing products.
She tests over 10 different products, such as Battery Chargers/PSU, Stair Lift Control Boards, Rectifiers, Alarm Cards, etc. Testing new products, Programming circuit boards and micro chips testing with ATE and Faults finding to component level, repairing on both new and old products.
Currently, Majula is working with Africell Gambia Limited as an Electrical Engineer, Assistant Power Manger. Among her responsibilities include, Engineer co-ordinates, plans, initiate operations and control the performance of the power installations to ensure the integrity of the sites and ensure proper management of company assets. This includes commissioning of power equipment.
She operates a regular programme of maintenance and repairs of power installation facilities at all sites and office electrical fixtures and serves as a mentoring team leader especially supervisors to ensure effective succession planning.
This woman, Majula has no doubt achieved greatness in all respects and thus deserves to be portrayed as an extraordinary young woman with a difference.
