The Gambia is a peaceful country. The people, regardless of ethnic identity or political affiliations, are living in peace, love and harmony. The secret behind this success story is the enviable prevailing religious tolerance, which enables the different religious groups in the country to co-exist.
This hospitality of the country is due to our common cultural values which have a communalistic orientation as well as a government that always puts humanity first.
The usual phenomena of the Christian community meeting the head of state and senior government officials during times of their religious errands to discuss matters of concern not only to the Christian community but the whole nation at large, which has a larger Muslim population, manifests that the government is firmly in support of such a religious co-existence.
In fact, the out pouring of positive attitudes on either sides of the religious divide, when they pay courtesy call on the head of state during times of their individual religious festivals, elucidates the truth that the people themselves have injected that culture of tolerance in themselves.
President Jammeh has hailed the attitude of our Christian brothers an sisters as exemplary and has called on the Muslims to learn from them. This in indeed is a laudable remark as it’s the responsibility of all human beings to imitate good behaviour and conduct for the betterment of society.
We therefore reiterate the president’s call on Gambians to develop positive attitudes towards each other and the state since it’s the backbone of our nation’s progress.
