Red Scorpions clock 21 years

The GFA First Division female club, Red Scorpions FC, will celebrate 21 years of existence in the country’s women football arena. As part of the celebrations, the team will organise a symposium on April 11 at the Independence Stadium to discuss the importance of sports in the society.

The team will also play host to Serine FC from Senegal in an international football match on April 12. Founded in 1988 under Ben Hupper, Red Scorpions first took to the pitch in the late 90s and quickly became a female club to contend with in the nation’s women soccer circle.

The club earned their first league trophy in 2006 before successfully defending the title the following season. Red Scorpions also claimed the maiden Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay trophy in 2004. Chorro Mbenga, a coach with the club, said the celebrations will focus on women, to make them proud of engaging in the trade of sports, especially football.

She revealed that the celebrations are also aimed at drawing attention to the great need to revive female football, which remains dormant despite the efforts of the national football’s governing body to create a female league. Ms Mbenga added that they will also use the occasion to decorate with certificates, those parents who continue to encourage their kids to star for the club.
