Please allow me to make my appeal to the concerned authorities, the president in particular, with regard to this topic. I read recently that the convicted British couple are begging the president to pardon them and get them released.
I have also read from the Daily Telegraph a plea from one Mr Rae, a friend of the couple, to the president, on behalf of the convicts. As a citizen of Gambia, I feel my hospitality and dignity has been abused and has also been disrespected by these people. Adding salt to the wound, their countrymen through their media chose to neglect the facts of the case and attempted to tarnish the image of our nation - just in the name of defending their countrymen (convicted criminals).
I therefore, as a citizen, make my own plea too, to the president and other concerned authorities not to pardon these criminals. The judge has set an appropriate example and I hope they will not be pardoned, for this will be sending the wrong message to other potential criminals.
Besides, all those babbling and attacking the image of our nation will have less regard for the RULE OF LAW AND JUSTICE of a hospitable, peaceful and civilized nation as ours. I thank you for the space and your continuous good services to your readers and the nation.
