The Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, yesterday, embarked on an unannounced visit to the School of Nursing and Midwifery in Banjul.
During the visit, President Jammeh made some surprise announcements and donations. In an interview with the Daily Observer, Dr Tamsir Mbowe, the chief medical director of the RVTH, whose presence on the scene coincided with Professor Jammeh’s visit, disclosed that the Gambian leader donated seven new computers, a photographic machine and a brand new pickup to the school of Nursing and Midwifery.
The donated items were handed over to the principal of the school, Beatrice Haffna. And according to Dr Mbowe, President Jammeh also announced an eminent transfer of both the schools of Nursing and Medicine to the Office of the President “for effective management”. Known for his generosity, the Gambian leader also promised to construct a modern complex with lecture rooms and administrative offices at the school of Nursing and Midwifery. Dr Mbowe added that a projector was also donated by the president with the aim of enhancing lecture sessions in the school.
Two lecturers at the school of Nursing and Midwifery, in the persons of Modou Suwareh and Fatou Bah, will be sponsored by the president to study at masters and BSc levels, respectively. President Jammeh also promised to renovate the laboratories of the school and provide modern equipment and reagents. He also extended his benevolence to the fifth batch of graduates of the medical school of the University of The Gambia, promising to sponsor them to do their elective programmes in the UK, “but with the promise that they will come back home to serve the nation’’.
The students, who were joyously shouting following the president’s pronouncement of the sponsorship package, assured the Gambian leader of their commitment to nation building. However, President Jammeh advised the students to keep the school clean, stressing that “no health system can effectively function without proper environmental sanitation”. He also advised the students to be patriotic and have love for their country. Five washing machines were also donated by the Gambian leader, this time to the RVTH.
He also promised to rehabilitate the former administrative building of the RVTH. Also donated by the president were D50,000, to students of Nursing and Midwifery; D50,000 to students of the Medical school; D50,000 for the lecturers at the School of Nursing and D10,000 to the workers at the RVTH laundry. Present at the occasion were Dr Mariatou Jallow, SoS for Health and Social Welfare, and Saihou Janneh, deputy permanent secretary at the same department of state.
