President Jammeh receives excellence award

The Gambian leader, His Excellency Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, in recognition of his immense contribution to Gambian sports, on Wednesday, received an Award of Excellence from Father Joseph A Gough, former Principal of St. Augustine’s High School, at a presentation ceremony held at the cabinet room in State House, Banjul.

Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh also received from Father Gough US$5,000 (five thousand dollars) in support of education, on behalf of the Jammeh Foundation for Peace. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, President Jammeh thanked Father Gough for the benevolent gesture.

According to Professor Jammeh, Father Gough’s contribution to the education and sports sectors of The Gambia shows that he is a true friend of The Gambia.
“Thanks to Father Gough’s efforts, it was during his stay in The Gambia that football  became a household name for Gambians,” Professor Jammeh remarked.

The Gambian leader added that Father Gough is complementing government’s efforts in national development. Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh also assured the veteran sport support that that before 2011, Gambian athletics and other sporting disciplines will be put on the world map. He promised to support Father Gough foundation in Manjai Kunda with an amount of D100,000.

President Jammeh finally declared that Father Gough will be made a goodwill Ambassador, and that at the same time be confered with an honourary citizenship of The Gambia. For his part, Father Gough said his mission to State House was meant to present to President Jammeh with an award of Excellence in recognition of his support to the development of sports in The Gambia, as well as to present US$5,000 to the President on behalf of Jammeh Foundation for Peace, in support of education. He expressed delight at meeting President Jammeh and promised to continue  to support education and sport sectors in The Gambia.

Jim Wadda, a veteran sportsman who accompanied Father Gough to State House, described the Father as inspirational in the areas of sports and education. According to him, the time had come for The Gambia to participate in world sports events. He revealed that Father Joseph Gough has spent a huge amount of money on Father Gough Foundation in Manjai Kunda.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Sheriff Gomez, secretary of state for Youth and Sports, said the government of The Gambia values Father Gough’s contribution to the development of youths and sports.  He said his doors were open for the Father Gough Foundation in Manjai, and he expressed hope to forge greater links to deliver excellence in youths and sports. SoS Gomez also called on Gambians abroad to contribute their quota to the development of youths and sports in The Gambia.

The presentation ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie Saidy, Vice President and Secretary of State for Women’s Affairs, Teneng Mba Jaiteh, Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service, as well as other Secretaries of State.
