Following the ultimatum passed on Tuesday by Commissioner Jammeh Conta, the head of Mobile Traffic of The Gambia Police Force, for Bakau Taxi drivers plying the route Westfield to Bakau to desist from using the Sabena junction as a car park and continue to Bakau, your daily newspaper went around to sound people opinions on this important development.

I want to commend the police for the job well done. The move is an important step in the right direction. We have been suffering at the hands of the drivers for quite a long time which sometimes compelled us to pay double fares. Mostly this happens in a situation where you are in a haste.

To be frank, I’ve to admit that I was not aware of this new development. It’s unfortunate to see that some drivers are not complying. If the system is fully established, people will be very grateful to the police.

The police’s decision will help public transport users to stop paying double fares. They have been cheating people for quite a long time. The intervention of the police will play a great role in addressing the longstanding problems that we were facing. The police and The Gambia Transport Control Association must also ensure they put in place a system that will totally restructure the existing car parks. In this regard, all passengers will be given a ticket with the respective car number. This will help to trace the car anytime you want. I am appealing to the authorities to take drastic measures against the defaulters.

The police should ensure that no driver violates the Commissioner’s order. This decision is really in line with President Jammeh’s stance for social justice. Gambians should not accept any form of malpractices.
