Honourable Sheriff Abba Sanyang, the Foni Kansala parliamentarian, who is the project manager of the President’s Empowerment of Girls Education Project (PEGEP), has disclosed that the estimated projection of his institution for the 2008-2009 academic year is D35,892,375 (thirty-five million, eight hundred and ninety-two thousand, three hundred and seventy-five dalasis).

According to him, this projection will cover the tuition fees of students (girls) in Upper Basic and Senior Secondary Schools including Madarasas, as well as those at national and international tertiary institutions. The PEGEP project manager made this disclosure on Thursday, during an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer at his office at the Jammeh Foundation secretariat in Churchill’s Town.

He also told this paper that in the 2007-2008 academic year, the project gave close to D35,000,000 to at least 32,500 students at the local and international levels. He added that this huge investment in girls’ education, which is supported by the Gambian leader, is necessitated by the fact that President Jammeh attaches great importance to girls’ education.

While stating that the sources of funding for the project are realised from the president’s farming activities, Honourable Sanyang pointed out that the Taiwanese are the only donors of the project. To make the project a long lasting one for the benefit of the citizens, the PEGEP boss emphasised the need for stakeholders’ intervention, noting that the president alone cannot do it all.

He further reiterated that Gambians should take ownership of this vast project and not only leave it in the hands of the president. In addition, he pointed out that a partnership conference is to be convened very soon so as to create a common platform for stakeholders and potential donors. He also revealed that a graduation ceremony is in the pipe-line for all PEGEP-sponsored students. Honourable Sanyang further stated his organisation’s resolution to embark on quality assurance, community assistance programmes, etc.

It can be recalled that the President’s Empowerment of Girls Education Project (PEGEP), was initiated in 2002, by the Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, with a view to promoting girls’ education.
