The Gambia Police Force, yesterday, benefited from a donation that is expected to boost its operations, precisely its traffic police unit, courtesy of Oceanic Bank, The Gambia Ltd.
The Bank gave out four brand new traffic standing dais to the country’s police force, at a presentation ceremony which brought together officials from Oceanic Bank, the GPF and media practitioners; it was held on the premises of the Gambia Police Force (GPF) Headquarters in Banjul.
The donated items, the benefactors hope, would transform the operations of the GPF, especially its traffic police unit, in terms of service delivery. The items are set for installation at the junctions of Jimpex and Sting Corner, which are said to be among the busiest traffic junctions within the Greater Banjul Area.
The gesture, according to Bode Okunola, Group Head of Business Development at the Oceanic Bank, the Gambia Ltd, is inline with the bank’s corporate social responsibility drive, and they see it as their contributions towards national development.
This, they believe, could best be achieved in partnership with the police and other relevant stakeholders in the maintenance of peace, security and stability of the country.
Bode, who presented the donated items on behalf of the General Manager of Oceanic Bank, Gambia Ltd, revealed further that Oceanic Bank was a Nigerian Bank with over 450 branches throughout the length and breadth of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He added that the bank has been a partner with the police and military police in Nigeria. Their partnership, he said, is inspired by their belief that whatever one gives to the police, you do it in the interest of the general public "considering the role of the police in any given society."
"We told the IGP that our mission in the Gambia is to partner with the police for promotion of peace, security, stability and development of the Gambia. We are resolved to contribute our quota to the development of The Gambia. And this donation is the beginning of such an initiative. We are more than ready to continue in this direction," he assured.
The Oceanic Bank Group Head of Business Development boss disclosed that his Bank was the second largest in Nigeria, and the eight largest in Africa. Commissioner Jammeh Conta, Police Commssioner of road traffic and control, who received the donated items on behalf of the IGP, thanked Oceanic Bank for what he described as a laudable initiative geared towards promotion of smooth operations of the police force.
He seized the opportunity to urge others to emulate Oceanic Bank, whom he assured the donated items would be put into good use.
He hoped that the development will open the doors of the GPF to Oceanic Bank and other partners in the development of the Gambia. He reiterated the position of the IGP on maintenance of peace, security and stability in The Gambia as well as the GPF’s resolve towards providing 24 hours security for the people in The Gambian.
Ebou Waggeh, Branding Consultant of Oceanic Bank, Gambia Ltd, spoke at length on the importance of the donated items to the GPF. He harped on the role of the police in any given society, emphasizing on the traffic police unit which is in control of traffic for safety of commuters and other road users.
Waggeh assured of the Bank’s readiness to work with the police at all times in the interest of peace and security. The occasion was chaired by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of The Gambia Police Force, Inspector Sulayman Keita, who hailed the efforts of Oceanic Bank, assuring the force’s readiness to work with them at all times.
