New interim board for GAMTEL

Tuesday, December 2, 2008
The Secretary of State for Communications, Information and Information Technology, Mrs Fatim Badjie-Janneh, yesterday, presided over the inauguration of a new interim board of directors of the Gambia Telecommunication Company (GAMTEL), at a ceremony held at DoSCIIT building.

The nine-member Board comprises of Katim Touray, former managing director of Gamtel as chairman and Mr Mustapha Njie (TAF), as vice chairman of the new board.

Other members of the new board include Foday Ceesay, acting Chief Executive Officer of Gamtel/Gamcel; Ebou Ceesay, acting chief technical officer of GAMTEL; Banding Sillah, acting chief financial officer; Muhammed Jammeh of the University of the Gambia (UTG); Lawyer Cherno Marenah of the Attorney General’s Chambers; as well as two permanent secretaries from the departments of state for Communication and Finance.

SoS Badji-Janneh gave a power point presentation on a proposed strategic plan on key issues aimed at revamping the country’s telecommunication company (GAMTEL), alongside its subsidiary, the Gambia cellular company (GAMCEL).

The presentation reveals plans of repurchasing of shares of Spectrum Company, to dispose of about 80% of country’s cellular national GSM provider (GAMCEL), with government retaining only 20%, and it also expresses the need for a landing point for the country.

SoS Badjie-Janneh challenged the new board to overcome the huge task ahead of them, warning that expectations were high. “The first thing that government, through DOSCIIT, expects is for the new board to deliver and prioritize projects that would help build the infrastructure and help provide accessible, affordable and also available services to Gambians,” she emphasized.

Mrs Badjie-Janneh went on to say that the Board should become an interim management that would take informed decisions and should be co-operative and ready to make a change in Gamtel.

“You are here to bring back growth in the sector and contribute in a way that will bring back the past glory of The Gambia’s telecommunication company,” she concluded.
The chairman of the new Board, Katim Touray, acknowledged the tasks ahead, assuring government, through DoSCIIT, that they would live up to expectations.

He acknowledged that it was a very difficult task, but that “with the support of all stakeholders,” they would surely get to their destination. Foday Ceesay, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Gamtel/Gamcel, who delivered the vote of thanks, echoed similar sentiments.

With the new interim management already inaugurated, expectations are indeed high, as many would wonder how soon the country’s telecommunication company which used to be one of Africa’s best, will be brought back to its old glory.
