The Methodist Church that arrived in The Gambia some 188 years ago has become autonomous and has inaugurated their Church President and other officials at the Trinity Methodist Church Serrekunda.
Rev. Norman Grigg recently became the President of the Methodist Church the Gambia becoming autonomous after 188 years of British support as a Church. In the year 1821, a mission was inaugurated in The Gambia by the Missionary Society of the Wesleyan Methodist Church and from that mission has grown the present Church in The Gambia which is part of the Methodist Church, where as the Gambia Methodist Synod has petitioned the Conference of the Methodist Church of Great Britain that there should now be established an autonomous Methodist Church The Gambia in place of but in natural succession to the existing Church and the Conference has willingly resolved to accede to that request.

According to the Methodist Church Gambia, there was a resolution of the Conference made at the 168th and 169th Sessions in The Gambia and in 2008 at Scarborough, where it was agreed to sign the Deed of Foundation and the Deed of Church Order of the Methodist Church The Gambia.
