Mandinaba-Giboroh road under rehabilitation

Monday, February 9, 2009
In developing countries like The Gambia, activities of the people, especially those in the business sector, are limited by certain factors, which include  lack  of good road network, which serve as a linkage between villages and commercial towns.

Therefore construction of good roads has become a prime concern for governments that are conscious about this fact.

In its bid to relieve the burden encountered by its people in this regard, The Gambia Government has embarked on a number of road construction projects. The latest of such projects, coming after approval by the National Assembly, are works on the rehabilitation of Mandinaba–Giboroh road, in Kombo East. The road is very important for The Gambia as it links the country to the Senegalese commercial towns of Ziguinchor, Kolda, Tambakunda, and even the capital city, Dakar. This rehabilitation exercise is currently underway, with Balast Nedam as the contractor of the project.

Over the weekend, some of the drivers who ply this road, as well as pedestrians and villagers along the highway, spoke to the Daily Observer about how they feel. Ismaila Badjie, a driver, hopes that the rehabilitation will put to an end a long term burden for drivers. He added that due to the seriousness of the damage on the road, they were bound to spend hours to drive from Giboroh to Brikama. This, he said, has forced many vehicles off the road. He praised President Jammeh for the development, describing it as yet “another step in the right direction.”

Fatou Saidy, a pedestrian, said the rehabilitation of the road would help women of the area a lot as most of them are gardeners and rely on the market in Brikama for their produce. Majority of the people who spoke to this reporter described President Jammeh as a visionary leader, who is always conscious of the needs of his people.
