Lamin K Marong Is New GTU President

Mr. Lamin K. Marong, the Principal of Muslim Senior Secondary School has been elected as the new President of the Gambia Teachers Union (GTU).

This came at the end of a two-day national congress of the union, which was held at the Paradise Suites Hotel from 7th – 8th August, 2009.

The congress, which brought together representatives from all regions in the country, was keenly contested.

Mr. Marong defeated his closest opponent, Mr. Martin Gomez of Saint Augustine Senior Secondary School by securing 77 votes. His opponent Martin Gomez secured 75 votes.

Prior to his new position, Mr. Lamin K. Marong was the acting 2nd Vice-President of the Gambia Teachers Union and Principal of Muslim Senior Secondary School.

The position of first Vice-President went to one Rohey Sillah, while Lamin Darboe emerged the second Vice-President and National Treasurer one Yahya M. Jallow. All the three positions went unopposed. Mrs. Fatoumata Jarjue-Khan was elected as the National Chairperson of the union’s women wing. The new Gambia Teachers Union executive will serve a five-year mandate.
