The necessity for a united Africa has always been echoed by President Jammeh. His actions and policy objectives strongly manifest his inclination to this direction. The Gambia is always at the forefront in terms of championing the course of regional cooperation and integration. This is simply because we have realized that in order to achieve the vision of a united Africa, we must amalgamate our efforts to boost our social infrastructures and economies. This we cannot do if we are not one another’s keepers.
The state visit of the Burundian President, Pierre Nkurunziza, represents another significant milestone in President Jammeh’s drive towards that noble vision. It elucidates the willingness and commitment of the two heads of state to building an Africa of Africans.
This is what other African leaders should emulate. War is out of fashion. It is time that Africans look onto one another as one people with a common vision. Leaders are the mirrors of our society. If they take active steps to forming strategic alliances that promote cooperation among them, the masses will have no choice but to follow suit. Such cooperations will engender a sense of belonging and identify as well as a sense of purpose and direction, which will eventually lead us to the African Unity.
No single micro African state can develop all by itself. It is only a united Africa that can wipe from our faces the tears of poverty and underdevelopment. African leaders should endeavour to liberate themselves from the colonial mentality of micro nationalism and uphold the principles of people like President Jammeh, who recognized that our integrity is our greatness and our humility, our strength.
On the home front, as citizens of The Gambia, we have to continue to complement the efforts of t our leader in this respect and galvanize our struggle for Africa and humanity at large. Wherever we are and whatever we do, we should always remember our national pledge, which thought us that we must stand together as one people and move forward as one nation. For if we insist on pursuing our personal goals, without keeping the collective objectives in mind, we shall be divided and indeed we shall fall.
