Just a thought on the environment and roads

Editor,

I was wondering why we do not use sea shells for our roads like we used to. I believe our municipalities could resort to building non-highly commercial transport routes with sea shells and save some money. Basalt from these foreign companies can be very expensive. I suggest that the area councils look for prominent businesses and name the roads after them if they can co-sponsor the construction of these roads. We can also mobilize for community labour; i.e, request for volunteers from the immediate community that will benefit from that development.

In order to curb traffic congestion, noise pollution and prostitution, the KMC and other area councils should create an entertaining district (zoning) and relocate all the bars and nightclubs away from the residential areas outside the city limits, preferably close to the tourist area or somewhere off the Bjl/Sk Highway, where there is ample parking space and away from the residential neighborhoods. The former location for the relocated facilities can be transformed into community centers, libraries and book stores.

Real estate developers like Taf, Social Security and other investors must include amenities in their estate developments. They should be able to give up some lots (land) for the establishment of amenities like community pools, playgrounds for the kids, tennis courts, etc. These amenities have resounding effect on property values and thus create vibrant and healthy communities. The developers must collect dues from the homeowners to maintain these amenities.
God Bless The Gambia.
