Jammeh Unhappy With Senegal, Gambia Relations

Monday, January 19, 2009
President Yahya Jammeh of the Gambia has expressed disappointment with the Senegalese government over what he termed as a breach of bilateral relations between both countries.

He made this denunciation last Friday while receiving in audience the grand Imam of Madina Bai Nyass of Senegal Sheikh Tijan Ceesay. He said “The Senegalese government has mounted a negative campaign of propaganda against my government.” He added: “The Senegalese authorities have refused to observe trade agreements, calling for free flow of goods and services.”

According to him the diplomatic treatment his government accords the Senegalese authorities is never reciprocated.

“All of this is a gross violation of not only regional or sub-regional protocols but also the very fabric that constitutes the two people as one,” he said.

He told the religious leaders: “Please convey to the other camp my government’s unflinching loyalty and commitment to the peace and tranquility that have characterized Senegambian relations since the pre-colonial era.”

He added: “The Gambia and Senegal have unique norms, culture and traditions.”

According to him, it is these bonds that irrevocably unite the two people together.

Speaking on the current war on Gaza, the Gambian leader said: “The international community and the Arab world are not doing enough to stop the onslaught.

He therefore urged the parties involved to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
