The Gambia Teachers Union (GTU), last Wednesday, organised its 4th Best Teacher award ceremony in recognition of the good efforts and practices of its members in the provision of quality education at a ceremony held at the Paradise Suites Hotel in Kololi.

The theme of the program was "Teachers Matter". Speaking at the ceremony, Alhaji Mam Sheikh Joof, ex-general secretary of the GTU, said the GTU should be commended for supporting the nation builders (teachers) to serve their dear motherland in dignity. "Always, people take time to celebrate those who in one way or the other have contributed in making the world a better place to live in. But would human society have developed this much without teachers? I think teachers need a tap on the back; they need to be celebrated and always remembered for their role in moulding the younger generation of Gambians and preparing them adequately to take up the challenge of developing this nation further," he said.

As a professional body, he continued, it is in place for them (GTU) to renew their commitment and resolve by exerting every effort to raise educational standards, ensure improved service, promote a climate in which the exercise of professional judgement is encouraged and to achieve conditions which attract persons worthy of the trust to careers in education as enshrined in the constitution and bye-laws.

For his part, the president of GTU, Omar J Ndure, described the award ceremony as a response to a global outcry for the improvement of the status and condition of the service of teachers. He disclosed that the GTU was supported in the implementation of the award scheme by the Department of State for Basic and Secondary Education, UNESCO, private institutions and private individuals. He urged the awardees to keep up the momentum, so as to enhance quality and standard education for their students. He assured them of the government’s continued support in the drive to ensure quality and relevant education is attain.
