Sunday, March 15, 2009
The secretary general and party leader of the opposition Gambia People’s Democratic Party (GPDP), Hendry Gomez, has written a letter addressed to the Gambian president, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, seeking a political alliance with him.

The opposition leader’s request comes two years before elections, with the ruling APRC party increasingly gaining popularity thanks to the unprecedented developments being registered under the current regime. The full text of Mr Gomez’s letter is reproduced below.

I wish to salute your courageous, visionary and purposeful moves and steps since you become the chief executive, commander-in-chief and the president of our great nation – The Gambia in 1994. Though I have been in the opposition party, I have watched with keen interest your noble steps at uniting the nation and in the nation building.

These are my submissions about your person, your party and some of your followers:

1. A leader committed to human development

2. An impartial leader who has no favouritism but mobilizing everyone for both urban and rural development

3. A self-less president who goes all out to mobilize finance, personnel and human resource experts from all works of life for partnership in developing the nation

4. Your commitment to vision, discipline and uprightness has been outstanding
These great values and many others that I may not mention have secured you a place in the bosom of every right-thinking Gambian and other nationals in Diaspora.

While I wish you a happy Independence and salute your leadership and charisma, it is my warm desire to team up with you in the singular pursuit of nation building. This will enable me to lend a helping hand in areas that may be in my domain. I am sure that my personality will pull a crowd of followers who belong to the opposition but are associates who believe in my ideologies without any coercion.

Details of such an alliance, if I am invited for a formal meeting with Mr President, will be discussed and concluded. I wish you happy Independence. May the Almighty God grant you long life to accomplish the good vision you have for our great country – The Gambia. Once again, accept my hearty commendation. Yours in nation building.
