Governor Ganyie Touray tours CRR seccos

The Governor of the Central River Region, Alhagie Ganyie Touray last monday visited the groundnut buying points (seccos) in his region.
 
Accompanied by Hon. Sainey Mbye, National Assemby member for Upper Saloum and Malick Mbye, Chief of Upper Saloum,  Governor Touray’s visit was meant to obtain first hand informations on how the marketing of groundnuts are going on in the region. In the Central River Region, Groupe Jubo, a community based organisation is also participating in groundnut buying at primary secco level.  
 
Governor Alhagie Ganyie Touray commended Groupe Juboo for their active participation in groundnut marketing at the primary level.  He further called on farmers to sell their groundnuts through the existing marketing outlets, noting that, last year’s price was pegged at D72,000 per ton.  

He expressed satisfaction with what he show in the area adding that Groupe Jubo alone has good sales. He thanked the Agribusiness Services and Producers’ Association (ASPA) which is an inter-professional body vested with the management of The Gambia groundnut sub-sector, in consultation with government of The Gambia.  He hailed President Jammeh’s efforts for initiating the spot buying without credit.

Speaking at the Fass Secco, the president of Groupe Juboo, Omar Satu Sallah, gave a brief history of his group. He noted that they have started marketing groundnut since 2005, supported by Action-aid, The Gambia.  He pointed out that they have undergone series of training on marketing adding that their marketing is cash and not on credit buying.

Hon. Sainey Mbye, NAM for Upper Saloum said his constituency is among the poorest in the region, adding that the groundnut marketing in the district will reduce poverty. He commended Groupe Juboo for complementing government’s efforts in buying groundnut.
Chief Malick Mbye of Upper Saloum echoed similar sentiments.
