Mr Lamin Jawneh, a representative from the Gambia High Commission offices in Abuja, Nigeria, yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Gambian delegation that are presently in Nigeria for the revived West African Football Union (WAFU) Under 20 Championships currently underway in Delta State.

Jawneh, a special envoy of the Gambia’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Her Excellency, Mrs Angela Colley, had a marathon discussion with officials and players in their Nelsrose Hotel Camp in Delta State as he delivered his boss’s warm greetings.

Speaking to Observer Sports shortly after the meeting, Jawneh, who reached south of the country after a 45-minute flight followed by a 257 kilometer journey by land, said: “When we heard that the Gambia Under 20 team will be participating in the WAFU U-20 football Championship, the ambassador called a management meeting where it was decided that a mission be sent to meet the team,” he said.

“Meeting our fellow countrymen in a foreign land is one of our fundamental roles as a mission. So I was here to know how the team is doing and to see what best we could do as mission to facilitate the team’s safe stay during the course of the competition.” “Fortunately, however, the report I got from the camp is very positive. I was told that everything was going smoothly and that the team is very much in shape for the tournament. So we can only wish them all best of luck during the competition.”

Reacting to the visit, Mr Omar Ceesay, the head of the Gambian delegation and the second vice-president of the Gambia Football Association, thanked the Gambia High Commission in Nigeria through Mr Jawneh for their concern. He said the attention given to the team by the Gambia High Commissioner will serve as a morale booster for both the officials and players as they represent the country in such a major football competition.

“We thank you for the visit, which will undoubtedly give us more comfort and courage to even do better in this tournament,” Ceesay told High Commissioner Colley’s envoy.
