Gambian diplomat charged

Lamin Sanyang, financial attaché at the Gambian Embassy in the US, was yesterday arraigned before Edrisa Mbai, principal magistrate at the Banjul Magistrates Court.

According to the particulars, Lamin Sanyang some time in the month of March 2008 in the city of Banjul and diverse places in the Republic of The Gambia, received the sum of US$26761 from the government of The Gambia for purchase of rock master drills, pieces of VTX 620 (13Hp) drill machines and failed to deliver the items.

He pleaded not guilty and was subsequently granted bail on the conditions that he provides two sureties with leased landed properties within the Greater Banjul Area each valued at one million dalasis, deposit all his travelling documents with the court and report to the Gambia Police Headquarters every Friday between the hours of 9 am - 12:00 pm. The case was adjourned to 30th March 2009.
