Gambia Wrestling Association Suspends Gambia’s Tyson

Officials of The Gambia Wrestling Association on Monday suspended Gambia’s Tyson, Abdoulie Sonko, for a period of one month.

Speaking in an interview with Pointsports yesterday about this development, the President of The Gambia Wrestling Association, Matarr Jarjue, said Tyson has violated the contract laid down by the association for wrestlers.

Mr Jarjue stated that the first combat on Saturday between Tyson and the Guinea Bissau champion went fine, but for the Sunday bout, Tyson refused to observe the rules noting that he was called three times by the referee to come to wrestle but he decided to not prepare early.

Mr Jarjue pointed out that when he came forward to wrestle, Tyson gave a hard push to the Guinea Bissau wrestler, Ogis, and the wrestling finally did not take place because of the ensuing commotion. Mr Jarjue explained that the points were subsequently awarded to Ogis because Tyson failed to wrestle, noting that as a result of this development the association will also ban Tyson for one month with a D750 penalty.

He also revealed that Tyson on account of his unprofessional conduct, has been dropped from the Gambia national team to the forthcoming ECOWAS Wrestling championship to be held in Niger later this month.

He added that the association will not accept any indiscipline from any wrestler because the aim is to develop the traditional game and also to lift the standard of wrestling in the country.
