Gambia to participate in Olympic Wrestling Championship

Gambian wrestlers will participate in the Africa Olympic Wrestling Championship expected to take place in Morocco early this year, revealed Matarr Jarjue, president of The Gambia Wrestling Association.

Speaking in an interview with Pointsports yesterday, Mr Jarju stated that wrestlers expected to participate for this championship will be selected from the armed forces and civilians noting that women wrestlers will also participate in both the Africa Olympic Competition and the ECOWAS championship to be hosted in Dakar in May noting that women of the various security sister services interested in wrestling and civilians will be selected for these competitions

He also seized the opportunity to call on all those aspiring wrestling promoters to register with the association and pay their licenses to the association.

“This will apply to both Gambian and Senegalese promoters. As before anybody who organizes a wrestling competition that individual has to fulfill these criteria.

Mr Jarju pointed out that this rule will apply to both organizers of traditional wrestling and boxing promoters.

He also called on Gambian wrestlers to register with the association so that they can be licensed.

He also disclosed that as part of the agreement his association had with the Senegalese wrestling federation, their Senegalese counter-parts will immediately send a coach and a referee to train Gambian wrestling coaches and referees on boxing wrestling.

He stated that this coming Saturday, the association will open their new arena at Buffer Zone at noting that after the opening the association on Independence Day would also organize a big wrestling competition.
