The Gambia College, last Saturday, embarked on its monthly cleansing exercise, locally known as set-settal, at the college campus in Brikama.
A direct response to President Jammeh's “Operation Clean the Nation”call, the exercise attracted participants from the schools of Education, Agriculture and Public Health. Speaking to the Daily Observer during the exercise, the principal of the college, Dr Alieu Badara Senghore, described the development as “a very positive move”.
He said that as a training institution, the college is trying to inculcate the idea of cleanliness into its students, who will in turn spread the idea to the society after graduation. He added that the college will soon commence the practice of offering prizes and gifts to students who partake in the cleaning exercise.
Dr Senghore finally called on all students and lecturers to take the exercise seriously so as to ensure a clean and a healthy environment. The president of the College Students’ Union, Ebrima Bah, said that he was impressed by the general turn-out, whom, he said, had come to work wholeheartedly to ensure that the college is clean. He called on other institutions to emulate The Gambia College.
Musa L Sonko, the man in charge of the finances of the students’ body, underscored the importance of the exercise, describing it as a ‘noble gesture’. He called on all and sundry to embrace President Jammeh’s call. Other speakers included the students’ union Information and Agriculture ministers, Alhagie M Dumbuya and Malick S Bah respectively.
