The Coca-Cola FIFA World Cup trophy which began its longest journey to 86 African countries, with the exception of Sudan in anticipation to South Africa 2010 World Cup is due in Banjul today, at around 6pm for the first time in Gambian history.
The trophy after arriving at the Banjul International Airport on 6th will be available for public viewing at the main entrance of the Airport, but according to the Local Organising Committee for this historic occasion, no one is given the right to touch the trophy with the exception of the Gambian leader who will unveil the single most celebrated trophy in human history to the Gambian people for public viewing at the Independence Stadium on October 7th 2009.
The Local Organising Committee for the event during the press conference at GRTS new building in Kanifing, a fortnight ago, dilated on the significance of the arrival of the world’s most popular and prestigious trophy in the country, describing it as a rare opportunity in once life time.
The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the Coca-Cola FIFA World Cup trophy tour to The Gambia, Sett Adu Baa, the Press Officer of the occasion who doubles as the Director-General of GRTS, Alhaji Momodou Sanyang, the 1st and the 2nd Vice-President of the Local Organising Committee of the event, Sheriff Gomez and Ousman Sonko, respectively, underscored the importance of the arrival of the FIFA World Cup trophy, adding that he will also avail The Gambia’s football family and the general public the unique opportunity to see for the first time the FIFA World Cup trophy, which is undeniably the most celebrated and popular trophy in the world.
As a result they called on the entire Gambian football fraternity to gather at the Independence Stadium tomorrow so as to make a close view of the authentic Coca-Cola FIFA World Cup trophy for the first time in life.
