Farafenni Mauritania Gets New Borehole

The perennial problem of water shortage in Farafenni Mauritania in the North Bank Region will soon be a thing of the past as the community has been blessed with a borehole having experienced water shortage in the area for a long time.

Speaking in an interview with The Point recently, the ward councillor for Farafenni, Wassa Sowe, said his people have been experiencing serious water shortages for the years. He said that sometimes the women will leave Mauritania to go and find water in the main town in Farafenni, which makes life very difficult for the residents of the area.

Mr. Sowe added that some of the people who bought land in the area still find it tough to construct on their land all due to water shortages.

He stated that the African Muslim Agency is funding the borehole. He noted that after surveying the area one of the staff of the agency, Mr. Afe, came to their aid.

Mr. Sowe thanked the former Chief Alhagie Samboujang Jagne for the initiative he took to make the project took off.

Sulayman Bah, the co-ordinator of the work at the project site, said the borehole is contracted to Swami Indian international Limited for the drilling of the borehole, adding that the drill dept is 67.50m and the pipe for the instillation is 153 mm. He also noted that the African Muslim Agency will fix the tank and the community will make an extension to the various areas.

Mr. Sowe appealed to donors to assist them in the extension programme so that the whole community can have access to clean portable drinking water.

Isatou Manneh, a resident of Mauritania, said the coming of the borehole is a blessing for the entire community especially women whom, she added, toil both day and night to find water.

She also seized the opportunity to appeal government to provide electricity for the residents of the area.
