We wish to add our voice to the out-pouring congratulations to our baby scorpions on their triumph at the African youth championship in Algiers. The gallant boys have made both Gambians and friends of The Gambia proud. We uphold that it is a moral obligation for every Gambian to rejoice and be jubilant as our gallants brought back home one of Africa’s most prestigious awards. Their amazing success at this prestigious tournament has indeed opened a new page in the annals of our sporting history. The boys have no doubt proven that with motivation and inspiration, The Gambia can excel at any level of the world stage.
We have seen the true value of sports. It can bring together families, friends and relatives in a way that no other human activity can. It is therefore, a principal agent in uniting people. As we celebrate the victory of our under-17 team, we all stand together as Gambians in pursuit of a common goal. Such activities provide a common bond among people that can easily propel the achievement of a desired objective. The upholding of sports as a national priority by the government therefore, deserves greater applause. This will not only go a long way in cementing unity among the people but also speed our development drive particularly the economy and infrastructure.
The country is blessed with a youthful leader who devotes keen interest in sports. President Jammeh’s efforts in assisting the boys with the necessary support, motivation and inspiration, with the aid of God led us to victory. His personal contribution to the success of the boys cannot be over-emphasized. We hope that other public figures will imitate the president in boosting the moral and pride of the common people in their endeavor for success.
But as the president himself remarked while speaking to the boys on a live phone call aired on GRTS, “we have gone a long way but we still have a longer way to go”. As we commend the boys on the Algeria success, we wish to remind them that this is not the end; rather it is only a step towards the end. Our aspiration is still high on them in the countdown to Nigeria for the world cup. We are optimistic that they will replicate what they have demonstrated in Algeria, in Nigeria and even rise up to become the senior scorpions. The president is with great will and conviction to continue to provide the sports arena with the necessary tools and support as long as they continue to be champions in the field.
On the part of the boys, they have to realize that they are now hot cakes in football. Clubs and football agents will soon start running after you for possible contract. But always remember that you are Gambians and it is from home that your foundation was built. No matter which country or club you play in, you must always make the fulfillment of national duty your utmost priority. That is what will enable your skills and career to grow from strength to strength.
As we celebrate this youth championship trophy and eagerly await the world cup in Nigeria, we reiterate our call on Gambians to reinforce the unity, harmony and peace that is flourishing in the country. We must continue to strengthen our loyalty to the state at all times for better Gambia.
