Crackdown on Journalists Intensifies

As Foroyaa Editor, Reporter Detained

The major crackdown on Gambian journalists is showing no sign of abating as Mr. Sam Sarr, Editor of Foroyaa newspaper and Abubacarr Saidykhan also a reporter with the same paper, were on Monday evening called and detained for questioning at the headquarters of the National Intelligence Agency in Banjul.

This follows the detention of Mr. Pap Saine, Co-publisher and Managing Editor of the Point Newspaper, Mr. Ebrima Sawaneh, the News editor of the same paper, Mrs. Sarata Jabbi-Dibba, First-Vice President of the Gambia Press Union, Mr. Emil Touray, Secretary-General and Mr. Pa Modou Faal, Treasurer, who were similarly detained on Monday afternoon.

At the time of going to press, they were all being held and no official information was made available to this paper as to the reason(s) for their detention.
