Convicted Police Officers Appeal

The three police officers who were recently convicted and sentenced by a Magistrate Court in Bundung for aiding and abetting the escape of eleven trial prisoners from lawful custody have filed an appeal against their conviction and sentences.

Cpl Lamin Jammeh, Sissawo Badjie and First Class Shiekh Sowe, were on 27th July 2009 convicted and sentenced by the Bundung Magistrates’ Court, presided over by the then Magistrate Kumba Sillah Camara for aiding and abetting the escape of eleven trial prisoners from lawful custody at the Bundung Police Station.

The appeal was mentioned yesterday and adjourned to 2nd November 2009, before Justice Joseph Wowo at the Banjul High Court.

Justice Joseph Wowo told the court that there was no record of proceedings before the court from the Lower Court.

He urged the Counsel for the appellants to make sure that the record of proceedings is ready before the next adjourned date.

Cpl Lamin Jammeh was convicted and sentenced to a one-year mandatory jail term, while Cpl Sissawo Badjie received a mandatory jail term of nine months and First Class Shiekh Sowe got six months’ mandatory jail term.
