Canadian soccer club, Montreal Impact, could be set to capture their first Gambian prospect after offering a trial to Gambia and Bakau United top striker Pa Amadou Gai commonly known as Daddy Gai.
The tall-lanky forward has recently flown to Canada from Banjul to take up his invitation from the Impact and has since started his trial at the club’s Stade Saputo training complex – playing the entire 90 minutes in the Impact’s 2-1 victory against the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) Citadins, on Saturday, in what was the club’s 14th preseason game of the training camp.
Daddy Gai is one of Gambia’s most feared predatory soccer player, a goalscoring machine with pace, power and aggression to burn. He is widely respected as one of the best natural strikers in the country today due to his quick pace and deadly shooting technique. Gai, whose tremendous work ethic and natural ability combine to make a player of international quality, presently leads the scoring chart in the 2009 Gambia Football Association First Division League season, having scored 9 goals in his11 appearances for Bakau United in just concluded first round fixtures.
Montreal Impact
Montreal Impact is a professional soccer team, founded in 1993. The team are a member of the USL First Division, the second tier of the American and Canadian Soccer Pyramids.
The Impact was founded in 1993 by the Saputo family, following the demise of Montreal Supra and their league (the Canadian Soccer League). They became a dominant club in the American Professional Soccer League (1993–1996) and the A-League (1997–2003), renamed the USL First Division (2004). The team did not compete during the 1999 A-League season. Their main rivals are the Rochester Rhinos and the Toronto Lynx prior to the latter's move to the USL Premier Development League.
The Impact play their home games at Saputo Stadium, a soccer-specific stadium opened in May 2008. As the name suggests, the stadium was funded privately (mainly by the Saputo family). Seating 13,500 supporters in three main stands, Saputo Stadium (FR: Stade Saputo) is located just east of Olympic Stadium in the city's east end. Prior to moving to the new stadium, the Impact played their home games at Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard.
The Impact, who currently have to two USL First Division League title to their names, will kick off their regular season on Saturday, April 18, against the Battery in Charleston.
