A dramatic scene unfolded last Monday when one Amie Jarjue of Brikama Kabafita gave birth to a baby girl around 5:00am and buried the child alive.
According to ASP Sulayman Secka, public relations officer of The Gambia Police Force, the child was found alive and healthy, after being buried for 5 hours. "On Monday morning when Amie Jarjue’s brother, Yaya Badjie, woke up, he realised that his sister’s pregnancy was no more. He got vexed and forced his sister to explain what happened to her pregnancy. His sister (Amie Jarjue) then confessed to him that she had delivered a baby girl around 5:00am and had taken a spade, dug a hole and then buried the child alive. Around 12:00 noon, she (Amie Jarjue) took her brother to the place where she had buried the child. The child was then removed from the ground," PRO Secka revealed.
He further stated that personnel of the Brikama Police Station were informed about this unfortunate incident, adding that ASP Fakebba Darboe, officer commanding, Western Region CID, and his team visited the scene and took the child to the Brikama Health Centre, where both the mother (Amie Jarjue) and her child were confirmed as healthy.
Meanwhile, in a separate but related development, the police at Kanifing station, on 17th March, acted on a tip-off that a lady called Fatou Tamba, had delivered but her child was nowhere to be seen. The police mounted an investigation and interrogated Fatou Tamba. She confessed that she delivered on March 15th and noticed that her child was lifeless.
Ma Lamin Ceesay, officer commanding, Major Crime Unit of The Gambia Police Force told this paper that Fatou Tamba took a spade, dug a hole and buried the child. He added that the body of the child was removed and a post mortem conducted. Meanwhile, Superintendent Ceesay, the Major Crime Unit boss confirmed to this paper that Fatou Tamba has been charged with infanticide.
