Bakau Grasp Gold in Zonal Final

Monday, January 12, 2009

After a fascinating first half display by Bakau against The City Boys in the finals of the Baby Muhammad Jammeh sponsored zonal championship on Saturday 10th January 2009 at the Serrekunda Mini Stadium, the city Boys yet again were torn to shreds by Bakau whose amazing first half performance saw Bakau with two early goals to seal victory.

Bakau took the lead after 11 minutes, courtesy of a poor defensive error only to allow Bakau’s Seedy Bah to open the score for his team following intense pressure mounted on Banjul. Shortly after the goal, George Cole of Banjul took a shot from a dead ball but which was neatly saved by goalkeeper Famara Bojang.

Banjul attempted to revive and uplift their performance but this did little to help when Banjul defender Samba Bah unprofessionally brought down another Seedy Bah of Bakau in the 18yard box of Banjul that produced a penalty which was converted by Samsedeen Badgie to make the score beyond the reach of Banjul.

At the resumption of ply in the second half Banjul injected fresh legs into the game that had little impact for them after Alhagie Fatal brought down Banjul Mustafa Baldeh and George Cole scored for Banjul from the spot to reduce the score to 2-1.

At the end of the match Bakau were awarded a giant trophy with 25 gold medals and a cash prize of D50, 000, Banjul received 25 silver medals with D30, 000 and Serrekunda East received 25 bronze medals with D20, 000. The most disciplined trophy went to Bakau and Abdoulie Jatta of Bakau won the best player award.

The match was graced by H.E. the Vice President, Haja Isatou Njie-Saidy, the speaker of parliament Hon. Fatoumata Jahumpa Ceesay, Secretary of States, NAMs , G.F.A President Seedy Kinteh and his first Vice, Major General Lang Tombong Tamba, and many other personalities.
