Sunday, March 15, 2009
The Gambia Under 17 team, also known as Baby Scorpions, have landed Algeria this morning for the 8th edition of the Africa Under 17  Championship finals which start on Thursday, March 19, in the Algerian capital, Algiers.

The Gambia team had a stop-over in Egypt for a three-week training camp  before connecting to Algiers yesterday in a journey that took them through Morocco. Unbeaten in four international strength testing matches against renowned Egypt clubs, the Baby Scorpions have finally arrived for the eight-nation tournament, where they are expected to play top class junior stars.

Champions in the 2005 edition, the Gambia have been paired in the same group as hosts Algeria, Cameroon and west African neighbours Guinea in Group A, which will be staged on artificial turf, while Niger, Malawi, Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe make up Group B. The coach Tarik Siagy-led side will open their group account with familiar opponents Guinea on Thursday,  March 19, in Zeralda before taking on Cameroon on March 22.

The Baby Scorpions will wrap up their group campaign against hosts, Algeria, on March 25. The four semi-finalists from the two-week event will represent the African continent in the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup to be staged in Nigeria later in the same year.
