Armed Forces Set for WALO Championship in Guinea

The ground is set for The Gambia Armed Forces Football Club to defend their title in the forthcoming West Africa Liaison Office (WALO) football championship in Guinea Conakry.

The Gambia Armed Forces team, that won the last edition held in Banjul in 2007, will face a tough challenge from other seven countries from the sub region.

According to information received from OSMA (Organization of Military Sports in Africa) headquarters in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Secretary General Colonel Abdoulie Kanos who spoke with Sports Digest said that eight teams have already confirmed their participation in the WALO championship to be held in Conakry from April 1st to 15th, 2009.

“We are expecting 10 countries but as at now only 8 have confirmed their participation namely Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Gambia and hosts Guinea Conakry,” Colonel Kanos pointed out.

The Gambia Armed Forces under the guidance of Coach Alhaji Sy, are set to  prove the critics wrong after a disappointing performance in the 7TH  African Military Football Cup (CAMFOOT) held in  Kampala, Uganda in December last year.

If their present performance in the ongoing GFA first division league is some thing to go by, The Gambia Armed Forces team can surely retain their title come April 15 when the Conakry championship will wrap up.

Armed Forces are presently leading the GFA league table with five points clear with a few more games before the end of the first round.
