Discussions like the one that took place on Monday at the National Assembly Chambers among NAMs, business people and other stakeholders are the sort of gathering The Gambia needs in its development drive. Indeed such discussions must be done in good faith, and with the ultimate aim of contributing to the general effort of improving on the country’s gains at all levels, if we are to defend the reason of contemplating them in the first place. This is by all indication the case with this land mark meeting.
Apart from helping to fix missing links, these sorts of media offer the chances of letting everyone express their views regarding the way forward. What makes it so significant is that it is being held with a very important organ of government, the legislature.
The atmosphere at the Assembly chambers on Monday guarantees these goals. If you doubt the role of our dear legislatures, explore their records with the past few years of their existence. This latest development goes to confirm the foresight of the leadership of the country’s legislature in terms of serving the purpose of its existence, which is firmly in line with the goals of the government of The Gambia, under the leadership of Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh.
Although we have no reason to doubt that these and many more innovative undertakings are poised to take place under the current leadership of the legislature, we want to urge that all the parties involved, whether you were there during this maiden meeting or not, take the deliberations seriously. And it is important to note also that we will not realize the ultimate aim of this innovative move unless we see tangible signs of its impacts on ordinary Gambians.
We would need more of this kind of meetings, not only among NAMs and business people, but also among all other key development partners in the country’s fledgling business community.
