African Youth Charter ratified

Deputies at the National Assembly last Thursday unanimously ratified the African Youth Charter.

Guided by the vision, hopes and aspirations of the African Union, the charter is inclusive of Africa’s integration, the inherent dignity and inalienable rights afforded to members of the human family as set out in the United Nations Universal Declaration of human rights. This charter recognises that youths are partners, assets and a prerequisite for sustainable development, and that they are of strategic importance for the peace and prosperity of the African continent, with a unique contribution to make for present and future development.

It acknowledges the role the youth have played in the process of de-colonisation, the struggle against apartheid and its efforts in encouraging development and promotion of peace in the democratisation processes on the African continent. During Thursday’s sitting, the move leading to the adoption of the charter was seconded by Hon. Seedy Njie, nominated member (Youth Rep), who spoke on the responsibilities of the young people. According to him, the youths have an obligation to the state, their parents and the African continent as a whole.

Fabakary Tombong Jatta, the Majority leader and member for Serrekunda East, expressed appreciation of the ratification. He spoke of the continued support and commitment of the APRC administration to the youths of this country. He described the youths as a vibrant and energetic category of the population who are the future leaders of the country. According to him, the move to ratify the African Youth Charter is a clear indication of The Gambia government’s commitment to address the problems of the youths. To this end, he stressed that as far as youth empowerment is concerned, President Jammeh has already taken the lead in Africa.

For Hon. Haddy Nyang Jagne, member for Jeshwang constituency, youths are the cream of the society and she recognised that their welfare always tops the priorities of President Jammeh’s government. Hon. Mamadou M5 Jallow, Hon. Foday Manka and Hon. Seedia Jatta, among other members, also voiced their views on the document, describing it as timely.
