Fifty farmers from the Comite` d’Action Pour le Development de la Zone Des Palmiers (CADP), a community-based organisation in the Senegalese region of Cassamance, last Thursday concluded a two-day field trip to the project sites of Saint Joseph Family Farm Centre (SJFFC) in Foni Jarrol and Foni Berefet Districts.
The team, led by Mr Yankuba Manneh, project co-ordinator of Saint Joseph Family Farm Centre visited a bio-gas plant project site in Sintet Fulakunda on Wednesday.
In his remark at the site, Mr Manneh noted that the visit by the farmers from Cassamance was part of an exchange visit meant for skills, techniques, and experience sharing on vegetable gardening. He further expressed hope that the visit will uplift the standards of the visiting farmers in vegetable gardening.
At Ndemban Women Vegetable Farm, the president of CADP, Dawda Sonko, commended SJFFC for the support they are rendering to the women gardeners. He asserted that the field visit would immensely equip the members of his organisation with new farming techniques to improve productivity.
At the Saint Joseph Family Farm Agricultural Training Centre at Besse in Foni Berefet, Mr Yankuba Manneh said the centre was set up to train school dropouts on horticultural management studies, animal management, orchard management, etc.
Mr Manneh added that since the inception of the training centre, it has graduated over eight young farmers who are now serving as model farmers at their respective communities.
The team also visited two Nerica rice fields, which are technically supported by Saint Joseph Family Farm Centre at Berefet Village. In receiving the team at Berefet, the host farmers commended SJFFC for the technical aid they have been rendering to them. They highlighted that cultivating the Nerica rice verity will help in enhancing food security in communities.
