Kicking out criminality in society

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Criminality is a global phenomenon; it is so rife in some societies that morality has no meaning in such societies. And the effect of globalisation is kind of serving as a stimulant, making even moderately safe countries like The Gambia feeling the effect.

To say that
The Gambia is safe from the threats of crimes would be a defenseless statement to make; but the fact remains that the country can boast of a relatively low level of crime rate, compared to many other countries in the sub region and beyond. But as we mentioned above, there is no room for complacence. And for this, the authorities have not been found wanting anyhow, as they spare not even a moment in safeguarding the security of the citizenry. This is manifested in the current wave of arrest of alleged criminals by security forces, which brings to light the reinforced effort in the general crusade of curbing crime rate in the country.

It has been said, time and again, that enhancement of public safety is the responsibility of every member of society. It is not restricted to a uniform man, nor is it restricted to the armed security man at his night guard post. It is obvious that we will be bound to remain at the mercy of the eventual consequences of this shift if we do not put our houses in order. And this is all the more reason why The Gambia government is not relenting in its resolve to contain the eminence of any criminal activities in the country.

In the recent past, we saw a slight surge in the rate of criminal activities, including gruesome murders. Notwithstanding, the country’s security mechanism was sure to be alert to the situation. But the help of the general public, it seems, is actually coming in, too.

The message that accompanies it is quite clear - if you have been looking for a place in The Gambia to export your criminal enterprise, the knots are so tight now that this country is increasingly becoming impenetrable.
