In a Bid to Control Unwanted Pregnancy
Information reaching this paper intimate that a village elders’ meeting convened last Friday in Kerewan, Baddibu, North Bank Region, agreed to slam a curfew in the village. The curfew, which seeks to restrict movement after 1 a.m., is said to aim at controlling the incidences of unwanted pregnancy, which mostly tend to involve under-aged girls. The latest such incident and the catalyst of the village elders’ decision, according to our sources, culminated in the killing of a newly born infant whose mother threw it into a pit latrine.
Consequent upon the alleged disregard for the curfew by certain people in the village, over 15 people were, in the early hours of Monday, arrested by personnel of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) in Kerewan for violating the local curfew. Verifiable accounts from the area indicate that some Kerewan residents consider the development as an unjustifiable attempt to restrict or prohibit the movement of people.
