Ousman Sonko, secretary of state for the Interior has revealed that plans are at advanced stage at his department, for the construction of Fire and Rescue Service Stations in Soutoukoba, Kaur, Kerewan in the Upper River, Central River and the North Bank Regions respectively.
According to him, this move is part of his department’s decentralisation and expansion process.
“This year, a complete Fire and Rescue Station is being built in Farafenni, North Bank Region”, he said.
SoS Sonko made these remarks at the National Assembly on Thursday while responding to questions from members. Asked by Hon. Abdoulie Saine, NAM for Banjul Central, whether his department has any plan of to build another fire station in the northern part of Banjul to tackle fire incidents, SoS Sonko responded “ it is there professional opinion that Banjul needs a centrally located Fire and Rescue Station.
A station placed to serve the burgeoning commercial hub of Hagan, OAU Boulevard, Ecowas Avenue and liberation avenue, as well as the residential areas of Half-Die, Soldier Town and Campama estates, respectively”.
The Interior secretary of state then noted that these proposed Fire and Rescue Service Station will only come for consideration after the completion of the decentralisation process.
