The Anda Ak Alhagie Yahya Jammeh Association, a registred association, based at Latrikunda German, will be organising its first ever cultural week Jamboree from the 15-25 May, 2008 to be held at the SerreKunda West Mini Stadium. The week-long event is expected to gather over 150 participants across the length and breadth of the country.
Established on the 23rd July 2006, AAYJ aims to promote unity through culture. It also aims at creating job opportunities among Gambian youths.
Speaking to the Daily Observer, yesterday, Njarcka Touray, president of the said association, indicated that the organisation has a current membership of over 300 registered members, noting that the cultural rendez-vous will go a long way in developing cultural sports among Gambian youths. "So by organising such an event we are making another step towards that direction.
However, about 90% of the participants will be Gambians, mainly from Saloum, Fulladu, and Niumi in the North Bank Region," he said.
"As of now, we are soliciting support from Government, Individuals and local NGOs, to enable us organise this event in a successfully. We name our association after President Jammeh because he is an exemplary man who is commited to upgrading the living conditions of Gambians,’’ he noted.
He then added that, they had big plans to put the event in the country’s cultural agenda, as their main objective was to make a quarterly event capable of generating income for Gambians. He disclosed that they intended to send special invitations to the SoS for Tourism and Culture, KMC Lord Mayor and all APRC stalwarts.
As the event is getting closer, he seized the opportunity to remind members of the association to regularise their membership status. Any organisation willing to support can contact the association branch on telephone 4391901.
