Sopeh Dr Isatou Njie Saidy Shrimpers Association, a registered self-help association, is soliciting assistance to procure a storage facility for their products.
Speaking to the Daily Observer, at the association’s premises, Mr Edrisa Sajo, coordinator of the Association and shrimp dealer, himself, described the lack of storage facility as the main obstacle hindering the smooth operations of his association.
He added that the nature of shrimps made the need for storage facility a top priority, noting that it would be totally difficult, if not impossible, to keep huge catches without any storage, either by the use of cold store or deep frezer. According to the Sopeh Dr Isatou Njie Shrimpers Association coordinator, lack of an efficient and effective market out let was another obstacle his association encounters.
Mr Sajo revealed that tourist and hotels were the main customers of the shrimp business, but he was quick to say that individual customers do come to buy for their household consumption.
On the price of shrimp, Mr Sajo said that shrimp remained the same and would continue to be the same, depending on the supply in the market. “The higher the supply of shrimp in the market, the lower the price and the same trend is applicable in terms of scarcity”, he posited. According to him, price of shrimps ranges from D100 to D75 per kilo, depending on the size of the shrimp. He further noted that hotels often demand big shrimp, a kilo of which is often peged at D150.
