Goal poacher Ebrahim Sawaneh is arguably the new revelation for the Scorpions. The 21-year-old lad arrived last week from Belgium to join the Scorpions camp - as he hopes to earn his Gambia debut when the Scorpions take on Lone Stars on June 1, in the Group Six opener of the 2010 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers.
The brilliant and fluid forward, who recently inked a 3-year deal with Koninklijke Voetbalclub Kortrijk (KVK), a First Division side in Belgium, has had a memorable season with his former Division Two giants, Beveren, in the same country. The pacey striker finished the season as Beveren’s top-scorer on 21 goals, and narrowly missed out on claiming the Division Two Golden Boot title by only a goal.
His 21 goals in the season was only bettered by Nigerian John Utaka who bagged 22 goals to aid his side into the play-offs at the expense of Mustapha Jarju’s former club, SK Lierse.
Sawaneh had been lured by various top clubs in Belgium and other European countries, but the youngster is delighted with his move to KVK, noting that he is in no hurry to star for Europe’s big guns.
“I am still young. I am just twenty-one-and-half, and I think I still have a long career ahead of me. So I have to make it step-by-step. If you want to take a too big step, you may lose your career,” he told Observer Sports yesterday at the Scorpions training ground.
Sawaneh was invited in Gambia’s Olympic qualifier team in 2006, but he played only one match where he came on as a substitute. However, the mesmeric striker is now slowly but surely shaking off his overhyped prospect tag. Sawaneh’s performance at the Scorpions’ Independence Stadium training ground in the past days is establishing him as genuine contender for a starting place for the Scorpions.
Looking back on his incredibly short career so far, the Gambian teenager can see prospect of things improving even more faster.
