Mr Andrew Charles Northfield,Managing
Director(MD) of Carnegie Minerals Company, Gambia Ltd, was yesterday,
April 7th, rearrested by plain-clothes officials from the Gambia Police
Force (GPF).
The Managing Director’s re-arrest came shortly after court proceedings
were adjourned to April 8th 2008 for continuation. No reason has been
forwarded yet for his re-arrest by the security officials. However,
information reaching this paper has it that his re-arrest was in
connection with the whereabouts of the keys to the company after its
closure some time late last year.
Yesterday’s sitting was characterised by submisions from Emmanuel
Fagbenle, Director of public prosecution (DPP) that the prosecution
attempted to get in touch with the second accused, Charles Northfield,
in an effort to find out the whereabout of the keys to the carnegie
company offices.
But they could not because the telephone of the accused was not
functional. He therefore submitted that the second accused be served a
notice on behalf of the first accused “the carnegie minerals company”.
The DPP reasoned that, the second accused person is the only most
senior official of the company available, therfore it “is my submision
that the second accused person be served a notice to know the
whereabout of the keys to the company’s offices.
Lawyer Mene, counsel for the second accused person, countered the
submisions of the DPP, arguing that the keys to the company were in the
custody of the police. “It is my submision that since the Carnegie
mineral company was sealed up by the police, nobody was allowed to get
near to the place.” He added that it was not proper for the prosecution
to attempt contacting his client without going through him the
’”defence counsel”. Mene urged the DPP to make his application formally
in court instead of making oral submision.
The presiding Judge, Naceeay Sallah Wadda, adjourned the case to April 8th for ruling on the DDP’s submision.
It could be recalled that Mr Andrew Charles Northfield is facing 3 counts of Economic Crime and one count of theft.
