NEA, KMC set for action

In fulfillment of the Anti-Littering Act, signed by President Jammeh, on July 14th, 2007, the National Environment Agency (NEA) in collaboration with Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), on Tuesday began a five day tour of wards within the  Kanifing Municipality, to sensitised people on waste management and the anti-littering law.

The sensitisation tour which started in Bakau, will be extended to Jeshwang, Serrekunda East, Serrekunda West and Serrekunda Central.

In his welcoming remarks, Luntang Jaiteh, Alkalo of Bakau, urged his people to strictly adhere to the newly established anti-littering law and always keep the environment clean.

He assured NEA and KMC officials that the community of Bakau will collaborate with them and shall always keep their environment clean.

Ousman Rambo Jatta, Councillor of Old Bakau / Cape Point Ward, said politics is over and that people should come together and work for the development of the nation.

He announced that his salary from KMC will be used to sponsor the cleansing exercises of the gutters in his ward, adding that his salary as councillor is not for him alone but for the whole ward.

Councillor Rambo Jatta said it is the collective responsibility of all Gambians to ensure a clean and healthy environment.

For his part, Yusupha Sanyang, Deputy Mayor of KMC, said the purpose of the tour is to educate people on proper waste management techniques and the newly established anti-littering law.

Deputy Mayor Sanyang warned that KMC and NEA will apprehend any defaulter of the anti-littering law to the police for prosecution.

Edrissa Njie, Cleansing Services Manager at KMC advised women not to leave their children to throw rubbish, noting that they may throw the rubbish in wrong dumpsite.

He further advised women to develop some waste management techniques and keep the environment clean. He urged them to disseminate the information gathered to other people in the community.

Mustapha Jallow, a representative from the National Environment Agency, (NEA) also advised the people to strictly observe the anti-littering law and report any defaulter or offender to the police, KMC or NEA. He said the NEA will do its utmost best to enforce the anti-littering law to make sure that the environment is always kept clean.
