The Gambia’s newest five-star hotel, Jerma Beach Hotel, was yesterday unveiled at a ceremony presided over by SoS Gibril Bala Gaye, on behalf of His Excellency, Alhajie Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh, President of the Republic of the Gambia.
The hotel, one of four projects conceived by the Libyan Investment Project in The Gambia, commenced construction a few years back and, according to its new General Manager, it had had the blessings of "the two great leaders of the sister republics of The Gambia and Libya. He said that the hotel came into existence based on the directives of the Libyan leader, Colonel Ghadafi.
This move he felt signifies the solidity of the ties between the sisterly countries. He hailed the Gambian leader for his unrelenting support and determination to ensure the success of their project.
Speaking at the occasion, SoS Gibril Bala Gaye, SoS for Finance and Economic Affairs, applauded the owners of the hotel for the noble venture in establishing such an edifice in the country. He assured the management of the Gambian Leader’s resolve in promoting a conducive environment for investment in the country.
The Secretary of State for Tourism & Culture, Honourable Angela Colley, was represented at the occasion by SOS Nene Macdouall Gaye, who emphasized, on behalf of the Tourism SoS, the department of state’s commitment "to promote the development of the tourism sector" which would ensure enhancement of the standard of living of the Gambian people and eradication of poverty.
"The Gambia", honorable Macdouall Gaye went on, "has more to offer than the sun and the sea." She highlighted, among others, the highly navigable River Gambia, the country’s rich cultural heritage as well as the hospitality of the people, who she said are always ready to share their rich cultural endowment, as some of the attractive features of the country. She advised that the gains realized by the sector should be underpinned with structures of this nature.
SoS Macdouall Gaye further posited that success depended on the maintenance of a high standard saying "competitive advantage well revolves around our ability to maintain high standard."
She said that we should ensure that we do not lose our market value in order to keep up with the rest of the world. "Standards", she stressed, "should be kept to international level." She revealed that plans are on the way for the completion of arrangement by the Gambia Tourism Authority, in collaboration with a Holland based firm to embark on the hotel classification process. She assured the stakeholders in the sector that the doors of her department of states are always open for consultation. Other speakers included the Libyan Ambassador to the Gambia, Dr Muhammed Dulully, Mr Ardy Sarge, among others.
The climax of the occasion saw the honoring of high profile individuals for their daunting support since the commencement of the project. The massive and attractive state of the art conference hall of the hotel was named after the Libyan leader, Colonel Ghadafi. And a block in the hotel was also named after the Gambia-Libya cooperation.
